MGV Students Pilot the "Tail Waggin' Tutor Program"

Marion G. Vedder Elementary School piloted the "Tail Waggin' Tutor Program" on April 22nd. The premise of the program is to create a relaxed and "dog friendly" atmosphere, which allows students to practice the skill of reading. Social Worker Victoria Vega and First Grade Reading Specialist Jen Hager implemented the program with a small group of first grade students when Mrs. Vega brought her three year old Therapy Certified golden retriever, Gordo, to school.
Ms. Hager's students prepared for Gordo's arrival by practicing reading books about dogs and were excited by their chance to read a self-selected book to Gordo. Ms. Hager found that by reading to Gordo the children's reading improved as well as their motivation to read. Their self-esteem also improved when they associated reading with something pleasant. The children will continue to practice reading since Gordo will return to MGV in a few weeks. Other teachers are considering implementing this program in their classrooms.
