NBHS Holds 21st Annual Science Olympiad

North Babylon High School recently held its "best ever" 21st Annual Science Olympiad with close to 300 students participating in the day full of fun-filled academic challenges.

There were ten competitive events throughout the day that tested students’ "science smarts." Teams vied for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place spots in teacher-created activities such as "Chemistry Hunt," "Map Reading Road Rally," "Airplanes, Airplanes, Airplanes," "Mystery Construction," and "Biology, Biology, Biology." In between events, teams bent their heads in a puzzle-solving meeting of the minds to complete the Brain Teaser packet. One of the highlights of the day is always the egg toss, where students come prepared with their own hand-made egg-catching device to see how far they can throw and catch an egg out on the racquet ball courts.

Students were not the only ones having fun. Assistant Principals Michael Scottaline and Elizabeth Walsh-Bulger spent the morning at the various events visiting with students and enjoying the competition. The NBHS PTSA with Mrs. Trentalage, Mrs. Giacomo and Mrs. DeBlasi were on hand to feed the hungry contestants with bagels, juice and snacks in the cafeteria. Board of Education President Mrs. Barbara Leun, Vice President Mrs. Audrey Jacullo, and Board Trustees Mr. James Shinnick, Mr. Salvatore Levanti, and Mrs. Barbara Ferguson were in attendance for the Science Bowl competition.

Science Director Alison Offerman-Celentano aptly summed up the event by stating that "this was an exciting day which joined together parents, students, teachers, and administrators to highlight the knowledge obtained and fun to be had with science at North Babylon High School.
