NBHS Seniors Win Science Awards

Two of North Babylon High School’s seniors are big winners this year at two major science competitions. Kevin Schmid won Honorable Mention in the 2nd round of the Intel competition, Long Island Science andEngineering Fair (LISEF), for his novel application of particle detectors to detect external cosmic ray events. (LISEF is one of the most competitive, premier science research competitions on Long Island). At the same competition, he also was awarded Special Award for Outstanding Science and Engineering Project from the US Air Force. In addition, against heavy competition against 121 other projects, he won 1st place at the Dowling 2011 National Science Foundation Noyce High School Science & Mathematics Symposium in the category of Physics.
Peter DeBlasi won 1st place at the Dowling 2011 National Science Foundation Noyce High School Science & Mathematics Symposium in the category of Science & Society for his project related to using algae to create biofuel. The project entitled, “The Effect of Electromagnetic Variation on the Biofuel Output of Nannochloropsis” focuses on the ability to stress algae to increase their energy production.
