North Babylon Teachers, Staff, Parents Attend Rally Against School Cuts

Close to 2,000 educators and parents attended a rally against cuts in education at Sachem High School East on Feb. 17th. Many parents and members of the North Babylon Teachers’ Organization joined the rally to protest Gov. Cuomo’s proposed $1.5 billion cuts to state education. With proposed cuts of $250 million to LI schools, many districts anticipate teacher and staff layoffs and drastic cuts to programs.
Many protesters said that Gov. Cuomo should consider renewing the so-called tax on the rich, rather than making cuts on the backs of school children and the middle class. Many of the parents in attendance feared that program cuts would reduce the chances of their children being competitive in an increasingly competitive world as they enter the workforce and/or go on to college.
