Parliament Place Kicks Off P.A.R.P. Program

Parliament Place Elementary School truly knows how to build enthusiasm for reading in students and this was evident with their P.A.R.P Program again this year. The P.A.R.P. program at Parliament Place is always fun and this year was no exception with the theme being "Discover the Magic of Reading." The program was kicked off with a Magic Show followed by many events such as "Read a T-shirt Day," during which the children and staff were encouraged to wear a shirt that could be read. The school also held a "Book Swap" where the students brought in gently used and grade appropriate books. The next day the students received "Book Bucks" to swap for a different book. The children were so excited and couldn't wait to read their "new" book.
Several authors visited Parliament Place during the month of PARP. Sheila and Letty Sustrin, authors of children's books, came to share their stories with students from grades k-3. The students enjoyed listening to the stories about Mrs. Belle, the retired teacher who goes on all kinds of adventures. They were also treated to a visit by Darren Sardelli who shared some of his many humorous children's poems.

Teachers also joined in the fun by switching classes and reading one of their favorite picture books to a different class. The children loved having these "special visitors." The BEST part of the program was the "Principal's Challenge." Each grade was encouraged to read and was given a challenge percentage of students to complete the program. Grades 1 and 4 met that challenge and won the "Principal's Challenge." Mr. Olson then served the children lunch that afternoon...hair net and all!

At the completion of the program all the students wore their pajamas to school and Mr. Olson visited each class and read a book. Each student also received a book and coupons, as well as a certificate. It was another fun event at Parliament Place.
