RMMS Students Attend Marine Science Summer Programs

Several Robert Moses Middle School students had the privilege of participating in two outstanding science programs this past summer.
Twelve Robert Moses Middle School students entering seventh grade participated in the Marine Science Summer Institute where they conducted temperature, salinity and conductivity experiments and performed dissections in a college laboratory on the NYIT Central Islip campus. They took field trips to explore concepts related to various marine environments, visited a salt marsh, conducted shoreline investigations, toured the Islip Hatchery, took the ferry to The Sunken Forest, and performed investigations aboard The Yankee III out of Captree State Park Boat Basin. This was an invaluable and enjoyable learning experience for these middle schoolers and Tom Deiner, Coordinator of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), said, "Students from North Babylon were a pleasure to have in our program this summer."
In addition, eight RMMS students entering eighth grade participated in the NYIT STEP Summer Adventure Education Program. They spent every day outdoors. Their activities included daily field trips to make connections between the natural environment they were exploring and Long Island history, scientific study, and issues of modern conservation. The program included a challenging course as well as activities in hiking, canoeing, a lighthouse tower climb, fishing and sailing.
Commenting on the programs, North Babylon Science Director Alison Offerman-Celentano said, "This was a unique experience for many of our students who have never been afforded the opportunity to explore these environments. Such programs will hopefully inspire many to continue with their science education through their senior year of high school and beyond."
