RMMS Wins Mock Trials Competition

A team of students from Robert Moses Middle School competed in the 28th Annual Western Suffolk Boces Mock Trial tournament at Dowling College on Friday March 25th, 2011. The Moses team prepared and presented both a plaintiff and defense side to a mock case with the prosecution team debating Smithtown and the defense going up against Mineola. These trials took place before a real judge presiding. The teams were scored based on their knowledge of the law and their presentation of their case. Mr. Dale Walden who prepared the students for this event is pleased to announce that both the RMMS prosecution and the defense won their cases. This is an amazing accomplishment because this was the school’s first time participating in the competition. This RMMS pilot program represents hands on learning at its best. Over several months, students studied legal scenarios and witnesses’ affidavits. The team developed their cases by practicing their courtroom presence, using legal terminology and keenly questioning their witnesses. Moses students walked away with knowledge of our legal process otherwise reserved for practicing lawyers. RMMS was represented by Jordan Bailey, Jordan Campbell, Anthony Covelli, John Cuomo, Joseph Cuomo, Sofia Fightmaster, Louis Levanti, Bryan McCarthy, James McKeever, Kaila McLaughlin, Victoria Mott, Lauren Nelson, Jaclyn Schoelermann, and Shannon Townsend. Special thanks to Mr. Wetzel and the parents for all their support.
