RMMS''s Spirit Week Features Teachers Versus Teachers Basketball Game

The hotly contested game between the Blue Team of teachers versus the White Team of teachers during Spirit Week at RMMS featured teachers who had some pretty smooth moves on the court. The "cheerleaders," of course, were the students who clearly had their favorite players and enthusiastically cheered them on.
The teachers had specially designed their individual t-shirts and many had their nicknames emblazoned on the back. The "Blue Team" had Mrs. Barry who is a towering 5'6", Ms. Nicholson who is a scary 5'2", Ms. Rice who was affectionately dubbed Rice-a-Roni, Mr. "Magic Man" Pollack, Mr. "Thunder and Lightning" Murray, Mr. "B. Healthy" Marchionna and Mr. "Brods" Brodmerkel.
The White Team had the advantage of height with Mr. Cashman at 6'1" and Mr. Hall at 6'. Ms Cerrito is 5'8" and full of energy which was matched only by Mrs. Simonelli, also known as "Shortstuff." She may have been short but she wrecked havoc on the court with her "steals." Then there is Mr. Walden, aka the "Silverfox" and Mr. Snyder aka "Spellcheck." Rounding out the team were Ms. Sarro and Mr. "No Shot" Hall. No Shot's nickname proved to be ironic when he tied the game 31-31 as the buzzer sounded at the end of the 4th quarter. With a tied game, a free shot contest was held to determine the winner, and Mr. Walden won it for the White Team.
This was a very exciting event for the middle school students. It began with student Jaclyn Schoelermann singing the National Anthem and this was followed by the dramatic and often funny entrance and introduction of each player who really hammed it up to the delight of the audience. Mr. Ted Wall was the very energetic and hilarious announcer who also functioned as a cheerleader for the students at various times. During the half, he conducted a dance contest between students selected from the audience, and some of them could really dance. Two young boys in particular were outstanding and would have given Michael Jackson a run for his money with their slick moves and renditions of the moon walk. The audience selected the winners of the dance contest and it was a tie between Matt Bisono and Darien Mercado.
Although the spirit was high at this culminating event of "Spirit Week" at RMMS, the students were impeccably behaved and knew how to have fun without being unruly or rowdy. The event and the students were both impressive. Kudos to the staff, teachers, and Ms. Hartnett, the Principal!
