NBHS Students Place First in Science Competition
Three North Babylon Science Research students -- Allison Nguyen, Cameron Billings, and Evan Skoller -- won first place at this year's Chemagination competition, which is run by the American Chemical Society. Students were challenged with the following question, "What innovation or breakthrough in the field of chemistry will be important in the lives of teenagers 25 years from now?" Students chose one of four categories: Alternative Energy Resources, Environment, Medicine/Health, or New Materials, and their entries were written as articles of 1000 words or less. They created a presentation board on which to present their ideas to judges at a local competition. Under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Kuruc, these three students won 1st place in the New Materials category and went on to compete in the Regional competition in Delaware. It was a valuable experience for our students and gave them an opportunity to meet other competitors from New York and New Jersey, view their work, and spend time with professional chemists who were present for their conference the same weekend.
Allison, Cameron and Evan came up with the idea of Computerized Contact Lenses. Utilizing a wireless network and a brain interface system that people would wear on their head or under a hat, people in the future would be able to network their brain with a computer and receive information back from the computer on a screen located in their contact lenses. Applications of the future technology could be in the area of GPS, communications, gaming and much more.
