Leaders Club Officers Attend Compassion Without Borders Conference

On October 22nd the officers of the Leaders Club, accompanied by Ms. Brown and Mr. Mouzakes, attended the Compassion Without Borders Conference held at Harborfields High School. The conference was presented by the Suffolk County High School Principals’ Association and over 500 high school students, represented by 50 schools in Suffolk County, attended. Compassion Without Borders was designed to bring together the area’s finest student leaders with the express purpose of identifying important causes within our schools and communities and joining forces to address these causes.
The first challenge presented to this fine group of students was asking support for Harborfield’s student Dylan Thompson who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and is confined to a wheelchair. Dylan lives with his mom and sister and, unfortunately, his home is not handicap accessible. Money is extremely tight and each day it is a struggle to provide Dylan with the basic necessities for life. Despite these challenges, Dylan continues to be an engaging student at Harborfields and manages the basketball and softball teams. Each school represented at the conference agreed to raise $1,000 to help make the necessary improvements to his home in order to make it handicap accessible, which in turn will ease his family’s burdens as they cope with the challenges of his disease.
This was an inspiring conference for the following students who proudly represented North Babylon High School: Christine Campanello, Natalie James, April Makely, Jillian Manzo, Kristie Mauro, Luis Medina, and Amy Vu.
