NBHS Holds Fun Filled 20th Annual Science Olympiad

"I am having so much fun!" commented a student as she moved through the hallway with her team from one event to another, and fun was indeed the dominant theme throughout the day at the NBHS 20th Annual Olympiad. Of course the fun was sometimes edged with some tension because of the competitive nature of so many of the events. "I can’t believe how nervous I am," stated another student as she sat on the stage of the Little Theater for the Science Bowl competition, the final event of the day. She was like so many of the students, totally involved in the day’s events which drew in close to 250 excited students.

There were ten events that students competed in as they tested their "science smarts" throughout the day. Teams vied for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place spots in teacher-created activities such as "Chemistry Hunt," "Map Reading Road Rally," "Airplanes, Airplanes, Airplanes," "Mystery Construction," and "Biology, Biology, Biology." In between events, teams bent their heads in a puzzle-solving meeting of the minds to complete the Brain Teaser packet. One of the highlights of the day is always the egg toss, where students come prepared with their own hand-made egg-catching devices to see how far they can throw and catch an egg out on the racquet ball courts.

The NBHS PTSA was on hand to feed the hungry contestants with bagels, juice and snacks in the cafeteria. Board of Education Vice President Mrs. Barbara Leun and Board Trustee Mr. James Shinnick, along with Principal Raymond Williams and Assistant Principal Elizabeth Walsh-Bulger were in attendance for the Science Bowl competition, which came down to a final question to determine the winning team for this year. The Science Olympiad joins together parents, students, teachers and administrators each year to highlight the knowledge obtained and fun to be had with science at North Babylon High School.
