NB Students Elated to Hear About ALS Discovery

North Babylon students and staff were elated to hear about the major breakthrough in ALS research when researchers at Northwestern University discovered the cause for ALS in late August. This was exciting news for it takes researchers a step closer to finding the cure for ALS and many other related motor neuron diseases.

North Babylon students and staff for several years now have been active in fundraising for Ride for Life, a local ALS chapter founded by Mr. Chris Pendergast who has been fighting the debilitating disease for many years. Ride for Live has donated a good deal of its fundraised money to the Davee Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurosciences at Northwestern Feinberg School that discovered the cause. As Barbara Brown, a North Babylon high school teacher and leader of ALS fundraising in the district, says, “It is truly amazing to think that our students and staff played a part in this discovery through all our fundraising and awareness efforts.”

Every year for the past few years, Mr. Pendergast-- who is a true hero to many North Babylon students--has kicked off one part of the Ride for Life journey at North Babylon High School and quite recently he told them that one day a cure would be found and through their efforts, they would be part of history. These students are a step closer to that promise today.
