NB Teacher Receives Podolski Leadership and Innovation Award

Two of Long Island education’s top technology trailblazers will receive the inaugural Fred Podolski Leadership and Innovation Award from Nassau BOCES. North Babylon is proud that Kathry Dein, a teacher at Parliament Place, is one of the recipients and will be honored during the 2011 Long Island Technology Summit on Oct. 18.

Dein, who began her education career as a math teacher, is known in her district for going above and beyond to help students overcome their fear of math. Being a member of the Academic Intervention Services team allows her to employ a variety of teaching approaches to home in on the style of learning that works best for each of her students. For Dein, this often involves technology...lots of technology. “I wanted to find ways to bring joy back to learning for the students,” she said. “If technology helps them to be interested, then that’s the way we have to go.”

To bring cutting-edge technology to her district, Dein has applied for and won several grants. She has iPads and laptops packed with software that allows students to learn at their own pace and receive individualized feedback.
