Parliament Place Wins $2000 Environmental Grant

Science and Math Director Alison Offerman-Celentano was awarded a $2000 grant to increase environmental awareness at Parliament Place Elementary School. Fourth grade teacher and Science Coordinator Tracy Jacquemain will be implementing the project entitled “Paper Pioneers: Closing the Loop” in her classroom this year. Students will be making their own recycled paper, which will be an effective way to reinforce concepts of conservation learned in earlier elementary grades and to introduce more complex concepts and vocabulary. Students will explore the process of recycling, renewable vs. nonrenewable resources, environmental stewardship and conservation through the art of paper recycling. They will apply their knowledge of physical and life science concepts to explore how virgin paper is made, what resources are consumed, and how the making of recycled paper can promote conservation of Earth’s finite resources. After this program, they will be able to educate others about how people can act to preserve Earth’s finite resources. Pictured: PP Principal Mr. Olson, Mrs. Offerman-Celentano, and Tracy Jacquemain.
