Science Teacher Reaches New Heights
Putting students first and communicating a passion for their subject areas, North Babylon science teachers are top representatives of their profession. Mr. Thomas Van Bell is one of those teachers. Not only has he taken on the challenge of inspiring 9th grade students in the area of science research, he has also taken it upon himself to expand his knowledge in this field by applying to the Department of Energy Academies Creating Teacher Scientists Program. Mr. Van Bell was recently accepted into this highly competitive three year program that affords educators the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of science at Department of Energy National Laboratories. Mr. Van Bell is assigned a mentor from the world renowned Brookhaven National Laboratories who will work with him in a program that provides sustained, intensive professional development that is experientially based. Mr. Van Bell will not only increase his knowledge in science and particularly in the area of research, but he will also have the opportunity to establish long-term relationships with professional scientists who will, in turn, be a great resource for our own science research students in North Babylon.
