Winter Track Athletes Win Awards

The Boys Winter Track Team,coached by Tom Duffy, built upon the success of last year by placing 2nd in the League III Championship Meet this year. The team also placed 2nd in the Suffolk County Large School Championship Meet with their best finish since the 1983-84 school year. The boys all turned in clutch performances and were paced by seniors James Ward (4th place in the 3200 meter), Marvin Mandat (3rd place in the 55 meter hurdles), Terrence Granger (4th place in the 55 meter hurdles), George Erazo (2nd place in the 300 meter), Sean Blackman (2nd place in the shot put), Berfrantz Charles (1st place in the 55 meter dash and long jump), and the 4x400 meter relay team of Marvin Mandat, George Erazo, Ral Monwe, and Michael McKenzie (2nd place).
Their performances earned the following boys All-County selections: Berfrantz Charles (55 meter dash and long jump), George Erazo (300 meter dash), Sean Blackman (shot put), and Terrence Granger (All-County Academic 55 meter hurdles).
In addition, Berfrantz Charles (55 meter dash and long jump) and George Erazo (300 meter) represented North Babylon at the New York State Championship meet at Cornell University on March 6th where they earned All-State honors. Berfrantz was crowned state champion in the 55 meter dash with a personal best time of 6.391 seconds. He also nearly won a second title in the long jump, with a personal indoor best jump of 23 feet and 8.5 inches, but wound up placing 2nd by 1/2 of an inch. George ran the 200 meter leg on Section XI's Intersectional Relay team in a time of 22.6 seconds. George and his teammates wound up taking 5th overall.
Girls who also won All-County honors are Catherine Sandkuhl (600 meter run), Vanessa Stewart (shot put), and Natalie Gadsden (long jump).
